A full moon hike to the Mission Peak

Mission Peak full moon hike

“When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in the worship of the creator.”

―Mahatma Gandhi

A Bay Area favorite, the Mission Peak needs no introduction. Considered one of the tallest peaks in this area, the views of the bay, the bridges, and the valley from the top are absolutely breathtaking! To me, a hike to the Mission Peak always brings back fond memories as this is where my hiking journey started many years ago when I first moved to this area. The very first hike up there is still etched in my mind and I feel the same sense of excitement every time I go there. The night time hikes on a full moon night to the Mission Peak is as popular as the day time hikes.

Trail:
Mission Peak loop from Stanford Staging area (5.8 miles, 2135 feet elevation gain)
Mission Peak loop from Ohlone College  (7.3 miles, 2145 feet elevation gain)
Location: East Bay Regional Parks District
Average time to hike during daytime: 3.5 hours (add some extra time for the night time hike as we tend to slow down our pace)
Difficulty: Hard
Parking: Stanford Ave lot or Ohlone College parking garage

There are many ways to reach the summit but these two are the most popular trails.

There is always something special about the full moons but I have never thought about going on a hike on a full moon night. Every full moon has a special name and has a reason behind it. Couple of years ago, just before Thanksgiving, I got to do my first full moon hike with a group and it was an unforgettable experience seeing the bay area from a different light. From the peak, it was purely fascinating to see the sun setting on one side and the moon coming up minutes later like an orange ball of fire on the opposite side. Viewing the full moon up close against the darkness of the sky was a sight to behold.

When we went there was a big crowd waiting with their cameras all set up to capture this glorious moment. Ever since then I had done a few of these full moon hikes and never fail to get fascinated by the beauty of this natural phenomenon every time I go. Most recently, I was happy to get a few of my friends accompany me on their first full moon hike and obviously they were thrilled by what they saw, Worm moon, the first supermoon of this year.

When to go?

Fall and Winter months are best times to go on this hike because the sun sets early and there is enough time to see the moonrise, spend some time on the peak and be back on time. Early Spring is good also when the rolling hills are lush green that mimics country side and wildflowers are in full bloom. First thing is to plan on when to start to safely be back by the time the gates closes. Check the sunset time and based on that start your hike. We typically start the hike around 5:00 pm.

When I first went, even though I went with a group, I was still a bit intimidated about hiking in the dark. But seeing the crowd made me feel at ease. There were quite a few on the trail including a couple of guided hiking groups. If you are doing it for the first time, I would recommend doing it with someone. We usually park in the Ohlone College parking garage on Pine Street and it is paid parking.

What to bring on the hike

As always make sure to carry enough water and some food of your choice.

GPS/Maps – This is essential especially if you are doing this hike for the first time as the signs on the trails at night time may not be quite visible. It is not fun to get lost on the trails after sunset!
Headlamps – Carry a flashlight or a good headlamp. This is absolutely required for the hike back in the dark. I like the Petzl lamps that come in different models. For safety I also carry a whistle with me on all the hikes.
Trekking Poles – Night time hikes requires extra caution and you may have to slow down your pace. The last section of the trail up to the summit is quite rocky and having poles may help with support.
Clothing – Depending on the season you go, you may have to carry extra layers and accessories like beanies and gloves. Most of the time, after sunset it gets cooler at the summit. Check the weather and decide on what you may need.

Conclusion

Night time hikes are just amazing especially on a full moon night when the trails are flooded with the moonlight. Be cautious with every step you take even if you have hiked it before. It is a good idea to go with someone or with a group and try to stay on the trails.

This is a very beautiful trail and because you start the hike in the evening, the weather is almost always pleasant. The stunning views from the peak after sunset is totally worth it. Here is the calendar to plan on your next full moon hike if you wish to!
